Our Brother, Joe Sikma, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 11:45 pm, this past Saturday night. Though our time with Joe was brief, his faith has made a lasting impression on me.
Megan and I had the great privilege to visit Anita and Joe at their beautiful home, just North of us. Less than two weeks ago, we sat as Anita proudly spoke of their family which decorated their walls, cherished memories in the tapestry of Joe and Anita Sikma. We laughed as we looked at the picture of their granddaughter that hangs just above their water-cooler, showing their granddaughter caught in the act of helping herself to the same water-cooler, barely of walking age but determined to be refreshed. As I listened to Anita recount the tale, I could see Joe quietly smiling in his chair, by his window, no doubt enjoying the story. I say “his window,” because that is where he liked to sit, listen, and watch the beautiful surrounds and passersby of their home and complex. In my mind, I can still see him smiling and waving from his window; such a testimony to the heavenly peace upon him.
As we sat and spoke of the health challenges that Joe faced and the unknown that laid ahead, Anita glowed in the Gospel hope, and with an ever so soft smile on his lips, Joe said to me, “I’m ready to go.” I got up and shook the hands of a man that did not shake and heard his voice that did not quiver. Joe’s bride, Anita, said it best when she wrote to me: “Joe was definitely a man of faith. It was unwavering. No matter what sorrows and trials we encountered, his faith and trust were steadfast. God is good – all the time.”
It will be our honour to bless Joe and his union with the Lord this Sunday, July 21, 2019, at Bradford Baptist Church.
